"Enlit Africa’s" 2022 motto was "Working together to advance Africa's energy transition" - and met exactly one of the core competencies of the SGB-SMIT Group. The local group company, SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA, is currently concentrating on the reconstruction of its’ Pretoria plant, which became necessary after a fire on March 7, 2021. All capacities are bundled in this task in order to restart production as soon as possible for the benefit of customers.
The SGB-SMIT Group was represented by Marketing and Sales – Power transformers, at "Enlit Africa" and was able to showcase what the Group is already doing in terms of efficiency, sustainability, and climate targets in Europe - and what the further plans are. The presentation entitled "Sustainability in the power generation and transmission industry: the journey to a green transformer" explained how the SGB-SMIT Group is driving forward the global production of transformers that are as resource-efficient, low-loss and environmentally compatible as possible - with measures including
- Participation in the "Sustainable Development Goals" of the UN
- Participation in the European Green Deal
- Extensive life cycle analysis of all materials involved in production
- Use of new manufacturing techniques and materials that lead to a lower carbon footprint
The rebuilding of the plant in Pretoria is being carried out in accordance with the principles of sustainability and environmental protection that the entire SGB-SMIT Group follows. When production there returns to full capacity on December 31, 2022, it will be done using the latest technology with low energy consumption and entirely new equipment. As a result, transformer production at group member SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA will be among the most modern in the Sub Saharan African.
