Courtesy title granted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the company with a long tradition
Nijmegen, 6 May 2013. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its foundation, the transformer manufacturer SMIT was granted the courtesy title "Koninklijk" ("Royal“). Thus, the company with its long-standing tradition counts among world-wide players such as Royal Philips and Royal Dutch Shell.
With this award, the company founded in 1913 is now entitled to call itself "Koninklijke SMIT Transformatoren“ or "Royal SMIT Transformers“. The title was officially awarded by the Queen's Commissioner of the Province of Gelderland, Clemens Cornielje, on the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary celebration on 2 May 2013. This was the last award of its kind to be granted by Queen Beatrix.
Clemens Cornielje called SMIT Transformatoren B.V. a "key player" in the construction of transformers and control switches, a company which attaches maximum importance to modernization and social responsibility. "Gelderland and myself are proud of you and the enormous contribution your company has made in the past hundred years to the development of our country“, Cornielje said at the celebration. He reminded listeners of the foundation of SMIT, which had been made possible by Willem B. Smit, one of our country's "greatest pioneers", who was on the same level with the Philips brothers. Cornielje praised the "brilliance" of Willem Smit who did not only demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit, but also committed himself to other projects, including the construction of the Goffert Stadium.
